Flexible.Specialized.Advanced Developed in partnership with leading energy companies, our curriculum goes beyone theory - it addresses the practical, real world considerations and challenges energy companies face on a daily basis. This "real-world" curriculum is taught by faculty from around the world who have extensive experience in the energy industry. GEM's continued success and ability to deliver such a highly-specialized energy leadership curriculum is directly linked to the continuous input, guidance and support from our Advisory Council along with faculty and practice leaders.

GEM Faculty

Dr.William Ascher.
William Ascher is the Donald C. McKenna Professor of Government and Economics at Claremont McKenna College, where he was the Dean of the Faculty from 200 to 2005. Before that he was the Director of Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy and the Duke Center for International Development. Currently he also directs Soka University of America’s Pacific Basin Research Center, and is a member of the World Bank’s Advisory Group on the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.

Through research on policymaking, natural-resource and environmental policy, strategic planning, political psychology, and political economy, he has written or edited fourteen books. Of these, eight have a significant focus on energy issues: Forecasting: An Appraisal for Policymakers and Planners, Strategic Planning and Forecasting, Natural Resource Policymaking in Developing Countries, Why Governments Waste Natural Resources, Bringing in the Future: Strategies for Farsightedness and Sustainability, The Caspian Sea: A Quest for Environmental Security, Guide to Sustainable Development and Environmental Policy, and Physical Infrastructure Development.

Dr. Stephen P.A. Brown.
Stephen Brown is recently retired from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, where he served as the director of energy economics and microeconomic policy. His work was instrumental in building the Dallas Fed's reputation for excellence in energy economics. He holds a B.S. in economics from California Polytechnic State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Maryland.

The author of more 100 economics articles, Dr. Brown is widely recognized for his knowledge of world energy markets and the effects of energy price shocks on economic activity. He has presented testimony to Congress and spoken before numerous high level groups, including members of the British Parliament. Dr. Brown also has participated in numerous studies of the Energy Modeling Forum at Stanford University, and he is currently serving on the American Statistical Association's advisory board for the U.S. Energy Information Administration. He has previously taught at Arizona State University, Southern Methodist University and Tulane University.

Dr. Wayne Cascio.
Wayne F. Cascio holds the Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership at the University of Colorado Denver. He has served as president of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (1992-1993), Chair of the SHRM Foundation (2007), the HR Division of the Academy of Management (1984), and as a member of the Academy of Management’s Board of Governors (2003-2006). He has authored or edited 22 books on human resource management, including Investing in People (with John Boudreau, 2008), Managing Human Resources (8th ed., 2009), and Applied Psychology in Human Resource Management (7th ed., with Herman Aguinis, 2010). He is a two-time winner of the best-paper award from the Academy of Management Executive for his research on downsizing and responsible restructuring.

In 1999 he received the Distinguished Career award from the HR Division of the Academy of Management. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in 2004, and in 2008 he was named by the Journal of Management as one of the most influential scholars in management in the past 25 years. Dr. Cascio has consulted with more than 200 organizations on six continents and is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources, the Academy of Management, and the American Psychological Association. Currently he serves as editor of theJournal of World Business.

Dr. Matthew Clarke.
Dr. Clarke currently resides in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where he is an assistant professor of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary and where he enjoys spending time in the mountains, running marathons, playing music and hurtling head first down the bobsled track at 70 mph. As a faculty member of the Schulich School of Engineering, Dr. Clarke is actively involved in energy related research and is pioneering methods to recover methane gas from naturally occurring deposits of gas hydrates. When the results of this research come to fruition, it will add an abundant and globally dispersed new source of natural gas to the global energy market.

Dr. Clarke holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Chemical Engineering and he is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Art History to complement his technical background. In his free time, Dr. Clarke is an elite marathon runner and has competed in races in Canada, USA, Sweden, Iceland and Finland. Dr. Clarke is also an accomplished musician who regularly performs jazz on the Saxophone, Trumpet and Guitar.

Dr. Marc Duncan.
Dr. Duncan has a diverse background with the majority of his life experiences in the private sector running his own consulting business in Hawaii. After completing his first graduate degree at WSU in Environmental Science, he worked for three different federal agencies, the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, the Economic Development Administration, and the Bureau of Land Management from 1974 to 1980. In his final position with the US government, he oversaw the planning and environmental assessment on over 10 million acres of federal lands in NE California, including review of mining, geothermal, and gas impacts.

In 1980 he and his family moved to Hawaii where his first wife had been born and raised. There he started Environs Pacific, Inc., that he ran as the president and CEO for just over 16 years. EPI was a diversified company that specialized in development, land use planning, and sales. Shortly after his wife passed away, he decided to return to the PNW where he had been born and raised, completing a PhD at University of Oregon in 2000. At UO and OSU he specialized in Intro to Marketing, e-Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. At Western State College he teaches Intro to Marketing, Consumer Behavior, E-marketing, and Marketing Research. He has also developed a new course, Business and the Environment, that draws on his resource management background and broad related experiences. He has consulted for some of Hawaii's largest companies, including Hawaii Electric, Mauna Kea Resort, and Oceanic Properties. He has taught classes for the Government of Hondura, Centex, and Telus, Canada's largest telecom company.

Mr. William Fox, J.D.
William Fox practices law in Washington, DC. His practice concentrates on international business transactions with additional work in federal agency matters (especially energy and environmental matters) and veterans law. In addition to his practice activities, Mr. Fox has had a distinguished thirty-five year career as a law professor. He began teaching in 1973 at Boston University Law School, continued at Indiana University and between 1975 and 2006 was a member of the full-time faculty of Columbus School of Law, The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. While on the CUA law faculty he served as associate dean for academic affairs for five years and from 2003-2005 was dean of the law school. He remains on the faculty of the Centre for Energy, Mineral & Petroleum Law & Policy, the University of Dundee, Scotland, as a Senior Research Fellow, where he teaches the course in international business law. He also serves as a consultant at the UNESCO Water Law Centre, University of Dundee. He was one of the original faculty members in the Global Energy Management Program, the University of Colorado at Denver.

Blending his skills as an energy practitioner and academic, Mr. Fox created and taught one of the first energy law seminars offered in an American law school. He taught environmental law at American University College of Law and elsewhere for more than twenty years. In nearly forty years as an attorney with both a national and international focus, he has represented crude oil producers, pipelines and refiners as well as a large number of gasoline service stations. He has represented natural gas suppliers and a number of business entities that concentrate on alternative sources of energy, including renewables. His book, Federal Regulation of Energy, was first published in 1983 as a 900-page comprehensive treatise on energy policy and regulation and continues to be cited as one of the definitive studies of the federal government's role in energy and environmental regulation.

He earned his B.A. at George Washington University with distinction and special honors. He obtained a J.D. degree at Catholic University and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School.

Mr. Fox is the author of numerous journal articles and more than seven books including: Understanding Administrative Law (Lexis/Matthew Bender, 5th edition 2008); International Commercial Agreements (Kluwer Law International, 4th edition 2009); The Law of Veterans Benefits: Judicial Interpretation (Paralyzed Veterans of America, 3d edition, 2002); and Federal Regulation of Energy (McGraw Hill).

Mr. Fox is a member of the District of Columbia and New Mexico bars as well as the Supreme Court of the United States and a number of federal district courts and courts of appeals.

Mr. Gary Hapken.
Gary Hapken started his career with Price Waterhouse Co. in auditing where he obtained his CPA certificate. After 4 1/2 years he left accounting for the energy industry. His career has included work in synthetic fuels development, oil and gas exploration and development, and transportation of natural gas. He lived and worked overseas for more than 10 years in various countries including Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Sultanate of Oman and Republic of Yemen.

Professionally, Hapken has had direct responsibility for all areas of finance and accounting as well as purchasing, warehousing, materials handling, office services, human resources, and IT. Additionally, he has worked extensively in the areas of process improvement, systems design & implementation and project management.

Academically, he has taught energy accounting for more than five years in the United States and South America with an emphasis on the international aspects of energy accounting. Hapken has a BS in Accounting from the University of Northern Colorado and an MBA from Regis University. Both degrees were issued with honors.

Dr. Maen M. Husein.
Maen M. Husein is an associate professor at the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta. He received his B.Sc. in chemical engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Irbed, Jordan, in 1995, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, in 1996 and 2000; respectively. He worked as a software engineer in the Power System Group at CAE Inc., Montreal, Quebec, from 2000 to 2002. His tasks included simulating different units of the power generation cycle of a nuclear power plant.

As a research associate at McGill University, 2002 to 2003, he worked on novel methods of preparing nanoparticles. These methods are currently employed to form catalyst for heavy oil upgrading, and nanoparticle sorbents to remediate the environment. His research interest is in the field of nanotechnology, reactor design, reaction engineering, and wastewater treatment. He has taught many graduate and undergraduate courses, including Renewable Energies, Engineering Thermodynamics, Air and Water Pollution Control.

Mr. Melvin Landry, Jr..
Melvin is an Enterprise Procurement Category Manager with ConAgra Foods, in Omaha, Nebraska, which is one of the largest food conglomerates in the world. In this role, Melvin is responsible for strategically managing costs and setting strategic direction in the indirect services segment. Melvin has also taught economics/marketing/strategic management lectures on the graduate level at many institutions traditionally (face to face) and online to include West Virginia University, Eastern Michigan University, and DeVry University in the role of adjunct faculty. Melvin is a certified online master reviewer with Quality Matters reviewing strategic management courses. Melvin also serves as a Western Area Associate to Crimson Eagle LLC, an Executive & Management consultancy firm based out of Minneapolis MN, advising on strategic management opportunities.

Melvin has previously served in marketing and commodity/energy procurement roles with other notable companies such as Kraft Foods North America and JBS Swift and Company. Melvin holds a B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Economics from the University of Arkansas along with a MBA in marketing from the University of New Orleans. Melvin also serves as an Advisory Board member of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS). In this position, Melvin is responsible for setting organization strategic direction and soliciting governmental sponsorships. Melvin is also is a member of the United States Distance Learning Association.

Melvin’s current research interests are exploring economic costs/benefits of climate change & the effects of alternative energy sources for vehicles worldwide and the marketing implications of such a transformational change.

Mr. Michael Miller.
Mike Miller brings 30 years of experience in leading multi-nationals such as BP, Castrol, PepsiCo and Ford to his next senior operating role. In 2007 he took up the challenge of growing an integrated alternative-energy company, Blue Sun Biodiesel, serving as its President and Chief Operating Officer.

Miller spent the previous decade, in Europe and Asia, leading large, cross-functional petroleum teams in complex cultures and demanding environments. As the first American appointed to an overseas CEO spot by Burmah Castrol plc, his strong executive leadership was recognized in two of their Annual Reports while in Malaysia and managing thru the Asian Financial Crisis. He was Chairman of a large Malaysian lubricant joint venture for six years, currently serves on several Boards and is also an Adjunct Professor with the University of Colorado-Denver’s Global Energy Management program. He blends strategic thinking with an operational management style to scale emerging energy/fuel technologies and build market leadership.

His track record includes successes in demanding general management, turnaround and integration roles, especially those carrying an international flavor. Earlier years consisted of broad-based financial and strategy experiences including corporate, regional, divisional and country assignments in roles such as SVP Finance and CFO. He’s led over 30 change initiatives during his career, many global or regional in scope, along with managing four start-ups. In addition to downstream energy, he has first-hand experience in marketing/branding and multi-channel distribution of fast-moving consumer goods. He enjoys authoring published articles and often speaks at energy events.

Miller holds a MBA from the Harvard Business School and has a B.S. in Business Administration from Northeastern University, where he graduated with Highest Honors. Mike lives in Denver, is a passionate fly fisherman who’s fished extensively on three continents, and serves as an officer of Denver Trout Unlimited.

Dr. Michael Moore.
Michal C. Moore is ISEEE Professor of Energy Economics and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy at the University of Calgary in Alberta. He is the former Chief Economist at the National Renewable Laboratory in Golden Colorado, where he led a research team engaged in examining over-the-horizon issues for the Department of Energy and developing new methods for cross-cutting analysis.

He served as a Commissioner with the California Energy Commission, where he held the designated Economist position. In that role he oversaw market structure issues, pricing of electricity and natural gas and data collection for the Commission as presiding member of the Electricity and Natural Gas Committee. He directed the $2B US program to maintain and expand the renewable energy industry in the state and presided over many complex siting cases for new fossil fired generation.

Dr. Moore received his Bachelor of Science in Geology at Humboldt State University and a Master of Science from the Ecology Institute at the University of California at Davis in Land Economics. He obtained a PhD from the University of Cambridge in England in Economics where he is a member of Darwin College.

Dr. Moore is an active researcher in the areas of urban open space and agricultural land conversion, local government fiscal impacts and the structure and rules of energy markets.

Dr. Frank Moseley.
Dr. Moseley earned a Ph.D. in Mineral Economics with a major in Business Strategy and Finance from the Colorado School of Mines. Frank also earned a MBA and M.S. in Petroleum Engineering from Texas Tech and the University of Houston respectfully. Dr. Moseley graduated from the Advanced Management Program at Wharton. He also attended a Real Options Program at Stanford.

Frank has numerous years of international business experience with multi-national energy companies in many areas of the world including the North Sea, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Australia. He has specialized in the areas of management, finance, and economics in these positions.

Dr. Moseley managed offshore and onshore projects within the energy markets. He was the president and founder of a private international oil service company and served as a Board of Director for three petroleum companies.

Dr. Steven Seay.
Steven Seay, Ph.D., a product of Silicon Valley, California and an MIT-trained strategist, is the Managing Partner for Crimson Eagle LLC, an Executive and Management consultancy based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Steven’s client list includes such notables as Kellogg’s, Harley-Davidson, Chicago Public Schools, Aramco and the U.S. Postal Service.

Dr. Seay has advised multinational clients on such issues as organizational strategy, human performance dynamics, Mergers & Acquisition infrastructure and implementation as well as organization effectiveness. His recent work has been twofold: ‘Effective Change Management Strategies’ and ‘Back to the basics in Customer Satisfaction’.

Dr. Seay is a frequent speaker, author and business/management lecturer at many institutions to include Auburn University, Nova Southeastern University, the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, Troy State University, Capella University and Southwestern College, as well as a visiting professor for Oxford University. Dr. Seay has delivered over 2,000 workshops to include Strategic Planning, Effective Communication, Managing Change, Consulting Skills and Customer Service.

Steven has served in executive roles with other notable companies such as Jostens, Best Buy, Oracle and Aramco Oil. Steven holds a B.S. degree in Organizational Psychology, an MBA in Strategy and a Ph.D. in Management and Organization Development. Dr. Seay also serves as an Advisory Board member for the Twin City Company--Pinnacle Services, Inc., a board member for the Minnesota Mental Health Association, and a former board member of the Twin Cities Human Resource Association (TCHRA).

Prior to business, Steven traveled the world training, practicing and competing in Mixed Martial Arts, specifically Kempo Karate, Brazilian Jiujutsu, Kyokushin, Aiki-Jiujutsu, and Krav Maga, and competed in Asian and Far Eastern games and cage fighting in Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Cambodia, Japan (PRIDE) and Morocco, all of which served to bring Mixed Martial Arts to America as seen in UFC fighting. Steven’s MMA record from 1986 – 1991 was 24-3-0. Steven is teaching his two daughters, Savannah and Tess, self-defense techniques as well as striking and grappling techniques.
